Will It Ever End?

Chris Rock is a racist.

For those of you who are not familiar with the “comedian,” he is as much of a racist as David Duke or any other member of the Ku Klux Klan could be. I sat in front of the television in horror recently as he proclaimed his hatred for whites, all in the name of “comedy.” What is sad is that he is mainstream and has a national audience bigger than most political candidates. Sadder still, I’m quite sure no one gave him the slightest bit of grief for his monologue of hate.

I am not on a soapbox and realize the race and bigotry issues are as old as life itself. I simply wonder when, or if, it will end so that we can find other issues to be critical of rather than a person’s color or place of origin.

You see, it is not a matter of political correctness. In fact, policitical correctness - in and of itself and when taken to ridiculous extremes - is useless because it implies that we are simply bowing to public pressures and thoughts. It implies that we are not intelligent enough to judge others for their thoughts, values, and beliefs and must therefore judge them based on how we are told to think and feel.

I am certainly not without some biases as we all come into adulthood with some unfair prejudices we must fight to overcome. But may we all begin the dialogue by not allowing a voice to those who are ridiculously prejudice against someone simply because of a skin color - and may those like Chris Rock and David Duke be written off, rather than celebrated as a comedian and elected to office. And lastly, may we each ask ourselves… Will it ever end?

As always, I look forward to hearing from you.
